WE WEAR THE MASKS
Devalued: The Inspiration

This mask represents the devaluation that Ghana has endured. The cotton depicts how the people were devalued and enslaved for profit. The currency on the mask bears witness to the constant inflation that Ghana endures all the while being a place where her resources are plentiful. She has endured constant devaluation of her people, resources, and culture, exploited by other countries making themselves economic world leaders. The gold on the mask’s lips represents the former name of the country. At the beginning of the 12th century Ghana was so rich in gold that she was called the Gold Coast, yet the wealth of her country hardly benefits its people.
