WE WEAR THE MASKS
The Walls We Put Up: The Inspiration
Oceane Kenfack Tonfack, Northeastern University, Honors Program Student, Mask Class Student Fall, 2022

My Mask is split in half. One side is completely adorned in a structured arrangement of white beads and shells. The structure mimics rigidity found in amour. The patterned layers represent the multiple layers someone has. This first half is to symbolize the walls, or armor, people wear to disguise and hide from the possible pain they will face while living in the world. One thing that is important to note is that not only does the structured mask disguise and protect but it also hides. It hides yourself from the world and sometimes hides you from yourself. This is seen on the other side of the mask.
The other half of my mask is detailed with gold leaf. Gold is what the world’s currency is based on and it is how things are valued. It is used in the mask to represent one’s inner beauty as that too is valued above all else. This is used in juxtaposition to the other side of the mask as it represents how when we put “walls” up, or put on a mask, not only does it hide our inner beauty from the world but it also hides it from ourselves. A beautiful mask can hide the most astonishing beauty.
