WE WEAR THE MASKS
Ghanian Wonder Women: The Inspiration
Pricilla Zhang, Northeastern University, Honors Program Student, Mask Class Student Fall, 2022

My mask is inspired by the colors red and blue. Red in Ghanaian culture represents bloodshed and strong spiritual feelings contrasted by blue which means peace and harmony. I wanted to incorporate both these colors because to me it used to mean one feeling had to always overtake the over. I could either be strong and tough or at peace. I wanted to show that nobody is either one or the other, but rather our mental health and feelings are always a combination of everything. We can have strong feelings but still have peace. The red and blue remind me of Wonder woman and her strength.
The cracks and imperfections are painted gold. This was inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi. It means “joining with gold” and it is supposed to demonstrate the embracement of the beauty in human flaws.
