Black folks the world over have been subjected to untold horrors and suffering. Despite this history—rather, because of it—our accomplishments and excellence are remarkable. Such achievements in the face of great adversity do not come without a toll, without great coat. An epidemic of mental health challenges related to racialized traumas pervades our communities, but supporting one another, and looking to the feats of those who came before us can lend us great strength. In my mask, the blue beads symbolize unshed tears. The gold and white horns and details represent a closeness to those who came before us. Together, this mask represents a story of oppression, trauma, spirituality, and resilience.
